Hello -

A recent review study in Nutrients of Pubmed and Medline literature focused on the effect of nutraceuticals in IBS, functional abdominal pain, and colic - all pain disorders of the gut-brain interaction.

Significant reductions in pain were reported for fennel (Foenieulum vulgare), herbal extracts including fennel, and peppermint (Mentha piperita).

This makes sense, as the main component of fennel is anethole, also known as estragole. Anethole is in fennel seeds and has a chemical structure similar to dopamine, with a reported relaxing effect on the intestinal smooth muscles.

And peppermint induces smooth muscle relaxation by blocking calcium channels and by direct enteric nervous system effects.

But what I really love about this study is that it focuses on infants, children, and adolescents with IBS and brain-gut pain disorders. Pain research so often ignores the little ones...
