Hello -

Artificial sweeteners are widespread but little is known about their long-term health consequences. (And what is known so far is terrible.)

Erythritol, a common sugar substitute, has now been linked to an elevated risk of blood clot formation, heart attack, and stroke.

Low amounts of erythritol occur naturally in some fruits and vegetables, and it's also made inside our body cells as part of normal metabolism.

But when used as an artificial sweetener, erythritol levels are typically more than 1,000-fold greater than levels found naturally in foods. Erythritol is a type of sugar alcohol - others are sorbitol, xylitol, maltitol.

Sugar alcohols are also known as polyols, and polyols are a type of FODMAP.

An NIH research team at the Cleveland Clinic examined found that elevated levels of erythritol - and several other sugar alcohols - were associated with the risk for cardiovascular events.

People with the highest erythritol levels (top 25%) were about twice as likely to have cardiovascular events over three years of follow-up as those with the lowest (bottom 25%).

And more about artificial sweeteners and IBS...
