Hello -
Combined oral contraceptives (COCs) are associated with higher risks for developing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and its subtypes. This is according to a study presented at the October 2023 annual meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology.
This is alarming, as COCs are the most common type of birth control pill. They have both estrogen and progestin. Progestin is the hormone that prevents pregnancy, and the estrogen component controls menstrual bleeding.
"COCs are associated with higher risks of developing IBS and all its subtypes," the authors write. "Further research would be necessitated to elucidate the role of estrogen and progesterone on the development and progression of IBS."
And more about how hormones can affect IBS.
You are not alone.
