Butter, margarine, olive oil, Crisco, canola oil, Wesson oil - it's all pure fat. The natural stuff - butter and oil - will probably have about 40 calories per teaspoon or 120 calories per tablespoon, all of it from fat. Smart Balance Light is whipped, so the calories per tablespoon drop to 45 - in other words it's fat plus air. This makes a little go further when you spread it.
It's labelled heart-healthy because it has no hydrogenated oil, that is no trans-fat, which doctors now believe is very bad for your cholesterol level and because it's a combination of fats which may help balance your lipid levels: some saturated fat, some poly-unsaturated fat, and some mono-unsaturated fat. Going fat-free is unhealthy. What you want is to get enough fat for your body to function and to get it from a safe mix of sources. Heather recommends no more than 25% of calories from fat.
