Honestly, my standby is pretty boring - in my family, major get-togethers always meant a big traditional dinner, so in the cooler months, I do a roasted chicken or turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, vegetables, salad - stuff like that.
In warmer weather, I tend to do some simple grilled things - depending on how many people we're expecting, we usually grill both chicken and steak, so there's a choice for everyone. Then I make either pasta or potato salad, fruit salad, and usually a three-bean salad or baked beans. If I'm feeling like I really want to work, I make tabbouleh (Lebanese bulgur-wheat and herb salad) and hummus with pita chips instead.
Basically, I pretty much cook what's safe for myself, and everyone else eats it. So far, there have been no complaints. I also keep things simple with the seasonings, since none of us really like the same things. Again, no complaints so far.
