Hey, Pretty Lady,
I have a wonderful suggestion.
You obviously love your grandma very much, and it sounds like she's kinda fond of you too. It can't be easy on her having to give away her things so she can move into a home, but giving her sewing machine to someone she believes will appreciate it makes it a little easier on her.
Here's a great thank-you suggestion for you to give her:
Something that she would really love to get is something hand-sewn on HER machine by YOU. It would mean everything to her. You could use the knowledge she gave you and make her proud.
Something she could use in the care facility would be a bedside magazine/book holder. I made one of these things in the 7th grade, and my grandma loved it. It's very easy -- AND there's a pattern for it in one of the pattern books at the fabric store. It's basically just a few squares of fabric sewn together. You slide a part of it between the mattresses, and the rest (which is a huge envelope-type pocket) hangs down below the bottom mattress. Your grandma could read in bed, then slide the magazine -- and her glasses, maybe even the TV remote, into the holder. It's something she could use every day and always think of you.
To make it even more special, you could use some leftover fabric that might mean something to her. Did she give you any fabric? Do you have an old dress that you could cut up, that might remind her of you?
When she goes into the home, she's gonna wanna visit from you, ya know. On your first visit you could bring her this very special gift. Can you imagine how much it would mean to her?
BTW, it's also a great sewing exercise for YOU. But have no fear -- it's all straight stitching, and if I could do it in the 7th grade, you can do it now. Something tells me you'd actually get a big kick out of it.
Bev
