It was amazing. Venice is so beautiful, so romantic, I didn't even imagine that it could be so idyllic. I had a wonderful weekend. If anyone EVER has any chance to get there grasp it (UK girls Ryanair fly to Treviso from Liverpool and Stansted) .
We flew very early Friday morning and were shattered so had a little nap before exploring. Our hotel was on a canal so it was just soo Venetian. It was a converted 15th century monastery so a classy building but a basic hotel in it.
For those of you who don't know Venice, it is all canals, the main sts are canals, there are no cars in the centre as there are no roads just pedestrian streets that are narrow and cobbled and you cross canals over little humpback bridges. There are no buses, instead there are ferries to get you around, the taxis are boats, the delivery trucks are boats...you get the drift.
The buildings are soo old and crumbly it makes it really romantic. The food is sooo yummy, lots of bread, the pizza often comes without cheese, you don't even have to ask! The main food is fish and seafood- perfect!
We did a lot of boatrides, including in a gondola, and wandered around a good bit. We went inside St Mark's Cathedral (amazing detail) and the Doge's Palace (wow).
My birthday was mostly spent sitting outside a Cafe on St Marks Square listening to an orchestra and drinking a cocktail of strawberries and champagne! We sat there watching the world go by for nearly three hours, then went in a gondola ride, for a walk and then back to the Square after a fish dinner for a huge shared icecream.
Bliss.
