Wow, everyone, thanks so much for your excitement! Lots of you asked questions about my plans, so here we go. I'm going to take both the NY and NJ bar exams, even though right now I only plan to practice in NY. Most states let you waive in after practicing elsewhere, but NJ does not. So, that means if I ever want to practice in NJ, I'll have to sit for the bar. I have no plans to live there anytime soon, but all my family is there, so I figure better to take it now.
I've accepted a job with the firm where I did my internship last summer. They are in Manhattan, and I'll be doing general litigation, with a focus on insurance defense. Yes, that means we represent insurance companies when they get sued. I know, I know, you probably all think I'm working for the devil, but think of me as the person who keeps your premiums low!
Anyway it's a great firm, about 35 attorneys. The oldest partner is only 45. Several of them went to college and / or law school together, and it's a very friendly atmosphere. I really enjoyed working there over the summer so I'm looking forward to being there full time.
The bar exams are at the end of July. I leave for my big Asia trip on August 5 (Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand), and return September 3rd. I'll start work 2 days later on September 5th! I'll probably be pretty jet lagged but I'm not too worried. At least I'll get a paycheck before my credit card statement arrives!
As I mentioned, graduation is this Sunday. My parents and the bf are coming to the ceremony, and then my brother, SIL, niece, 2 cousins, and aunt and uncle are joining us for dinner. I don't have the heart to make them all sit through the ceremony! My other brother, SIL, and nephew will be in Boston, where my SIL is going to be maid of honor in her best friend's wedding. So, they'll miss the festivities but we'll celebrate later on. I finish the bar exam on my 25th birthday so I'm sure we'll have a big party then.
My bar review course starts 2 days after graduation. They don't give us much of a break! I'll have about 3-4 hours of class a day, and 5-9 (yes 9) hours of outside work per day as well. I'm kind of dreading it but at the same time I'm glad that I'm going to be well prepared for the exam!
That's about it. The booze cruise was a great time. I managed to royally screw up my night, though. I had probably 4 glasses of wine -- not enough to make me sloppy, but plenty to make me tipsy. BF called around 9 and I told him I missed him and that he should come visit me. Boat docked at 9:30 and I headed up to my place to meet him. He lives about an hour and a half from the city. At 10:30 I called him and he said he was still about a half hour away. I changed my clothes and flopped on the couch. At 12:45 I woke up and saw I had 14 missed calls on my cell phone. I am the world's heaviest sleeper and even though I hadn't had a drink since around 8:30, I totally passed out and slept through his calls. He had been outside my building for an hour trying to get me to come downstairs and let him in. Poor guy drove all the way home again. I felt like the biggest jerk. Thankfully he was VERY understanding and I didn't even attempt to make excuses. I went up to his place last night (with steak) and all is well now! Phew!
Barristers Ball is tomorrow night and I'm really excited. I'm borrowing the cutest dress from my friend and I'm really excited to wear it! I'll try to post a pic.
Anyway I have to go catch up on the Grey's finale (don't give it away!).
Thanks for all your support!
xo, Panda
