I've gotten my hair colored in a salon twice in my life, and both times, it has come out absolutely HORRIBLE. By way of contrast, every dye job I've done at home since age 15 has come out perfect. Paying more does not guarantee good results anyway.
I've found that because my hair is naturally dark, I have to go with permanent dyes. Semi-permanent and other temporary forms of color don't even give me a wash of color; I need something that's going to really *process* my hair. I don't know what brands you guys have over there, but I use Colorsilk - literally the second-cheapest dye available. Garnier Nutrisse is another excellent one for naturally dark hair.
Dye your hair when it's dirty. If you can let it go unwashed for a couple days (like, say, over the weekend, and then dye it on a Sunday night), all the better. I swear it fries your hair less this way.
My caution about going darker is that if you hate it, you'll end up having to bleach your hair to get it out... or wait for it to fade/grow out. You might want to try red first! Personally, I think it would look great on you.
