I understand exactly what you are going through. My oldest son thought he just had to go to Chiropractic College. So he did and took out huge student loans to do so. He graduated and then moved to Colorado with a buddy to open his own practice. After several months of having his own practice he realized he didn't know what he was getting himself into. He was up every night wondering how many patients would have to come in so he could pay the bills. One night he called me bawling his eyes out saying that he made a big mistake and wanted to do something different. We supported him totally in his decision so he & his wife came and lived with us for several months while they could re-group. Then they moved to SLC (DIL wanted to be close to family) and he decided he wanted to be an Electrical Engineer so his wife worked and he worked pt. time and he finally finished with a masters degree and got a wonderful job that he loves. He took the roundabout way but he finally found happiness.

Sometimes they have to test the waters to see exactly what they want and if they make mistakes along the way we are always there to help them out.

Good thing that you haven't made the tuition payment, yet.
I hope you son will be able to make a decision that will make him happy.
