First of all, let me just say how great it is that you're looking for information to help your daughter I think that's really nice of you.
I began having my tummy problems when I was a teenager so I know how terrible it can be. I'm sorry that you're daughter is having to go through this.
What kinds of medications has the doctor tried her on? There are a lot of different medications out there so it would be good to know. Also, does your daughter take any fiber supplement (preferably soluble fiber)? That generally makes a big difference in how someone feels.
I would recommend reading through the information on this website and visiting the Eating for IBS board because there is a lot of really great information there. The diet really helps a lot of people...and it's not too hard to follow
One other thing, you mentioned the pain gets worse around her period and is almost debillitating...have her periods always been painful? I'm wondering if she's ever been evaulated by an ob-gyn for endometriosis. It can mimic IBS in many ways and the pain will almost always get worse when the period comes. Often times, you will have pain even when you don't have your period because the endometriosis is growing on the bowel or there are adhesions attaching things to the bowel. Just a thought
