I didn't see this post until just now, so sorry for the slight delay in my response...

I have a male cat that has a tendancy to do the same thing. In my experience, there's not a lot you can do. Sometimes a male cat will mark for territorial reasons and sometimes to make a point. One thing to consider is if there are other kitties in the neighborhood that make their way to the outside of your home... your kitty might feel threatened and therefor he might feel it necessary to mark things that belong to you to defend his "property". If you can, try to stop him while he's in the act and tell him in a stern voice that you don't want him doing that and why. My kitty responds really well to the tone of my voice, so it works well with him.

I really don't have a lot of suggestions, but I thought I'd at least tell you what's worked for me... marking territory unfortunately, is a very bad bad habit that's incredibly difficult to break. I hope you're able to get it under control... good luck!
