I think that that's a good plan, you are getting to go to the special day but masking your statement at one that is less controversial.
I am the eldest of 15 grandchildren on my Mam's side, but then the eldest 4 on that side are all from my family. THey used to get me to watch the kids all the time but the more I helped prepare the food the sooner I got let to eat with the adults!
Its really mean of your aunts not to cater for you at all, and to be so opposed to you bringing something to eat. A word of warning I really would not eat what is there if its not safe. Couple of reasons: 1. If it doesn't react rightaway or publicly they will think its OK for you to eat it 2. You don't want to be sick honey!
My brother's confirmation is on in April and we will cater ourselves (Mam, sisters and I doign salads, aunts bringing desserts) I have been thinking about the safeness of all the foods but I know we will have cold turkey, smoked salmon, potato salad which I can make w reduced fat mayo, homemade brown bread and pasta salad which I can make w FF vinaigrette so I won't starve. Given that I am chief caterer its easy enough.
The one thing that my Granny can't understand is that I can't drink a cup of tea with her- she always offers as soon as I call to her house and then remembers that I can't. She's so funny!
Sorry I have gone on for ages, to summarise, you are right!
