you can teach yourself either or both but it is easier to get someone else to teach you. most good yarn shops have beginner classes... or someone to help.. good books for intro to knittin: the dummies guide to knitting, and Maggie Righetti's knitting in plain english (she also has one for crochet).
if you have an adult ed program that has art classes- take some... learn to paint, or draw... or sculpt... even just playing with clay can be a wonderful experience...
