I'm in a running club, and I find that excellent motivation to go, even though I have only done 2 races. Another way to motivate yourself might be to enter a race that's a couple of months away (maybe a Race For Life 5k?) and train towards that.
I don't know how out of training you are, but if you go to Runner's World they have some schedules for beginners. I only started running in September, but I was already pretty fit from cycling, so I found their beginner's training too easy. Whatever you decide, at first it's wise to run for 20 min max, 3 times a week.
I'd also recommend starting a good stretching routine (I use the New York City Ballet Workout), as that way you will run less risk of getting injured and giving up.
