This page is a good place to start. It explains a lot of the principles of eating for IBS, so you don't have to wait for the books to get started. Be sure to read the sections on soluble vs. insoluble fiber - they're very very important!
For now, you might find What to eat when you can't eat anything especially helpful. Follow this for at least a few days - it's a little on the boring side, but it really calms down your insides. It still doesn't come with any "you will feel better immediately" guarantees - you MIGHT, but honestly, I didn't feel better for about a week after I started. Hang in there and stick with the diet, with no cheats - it's worth it!
Personally, I've found bagels are too heavy for me - you might have the same problem. I can't even eat half of one! Try a good white bread (bakery bread is best), toasted or not, instead. Pasta is good too, but you have to eat it PLAIN - no butter, no oil. For the first few days, I would seriously just put salt and pepper on it. Chicken breast is safe, but you still might want to do the "what to eat when you can't eat anything" diet for a few days before adding that back into your diet.
Good luck, and definitely post any more questions you might have!
