Hi - Milk has a lot of fat, lactose, casein, and whey. All of these elements can cause GI distress. For IBS, the end results can be diarrhea or constipation, depending on the person. If the muscles in the colon spasm too hard and too fast, diarrhea can result. If the muscles spasm and "seize up", motility stops and constipation results. The fat and lactose can cause both effects. The casein and whey are very difficult proteins to digest, and can exacerbate both diarrhea and constipation as well.
It sounds funny that a food could cause both constipation and diarrhea, but because of the way IBS phsyically affects the gut and disrupts normal bowel function, it really can go both ways.
Best, Heather
