Diverticulitis

A lot of people have diverticuli (little pouches protruding off the colon) and don't know it. I didn't know it -- I have 7 -- until they became infected, thus turning into diverticulitis, and I was doubled over in excruciating pain and sent to the hospital; a catscan found them. It's treated with antibiotics. The infection goes away, so that the diverticulitis reverts back to diverticulosis. It doesn't flare up again until it becomes infected. There is a lot of controversy about prevention of the infection; it was believed that seeds and nuts were the culprit. Stuff (like seeds and nuts, for instance) gets stuck into those little diverticuli and thus don't get flushed through the colon, causing an infection.

I cut out all seeds and nuts, and so far -- knock on wood -- I haven't had a flare-up in well over a year now. If I have four flare-ups, my GI wants to surgically remove the pouches so they don't keep getting infected.

I hope that answers your questions.
