Welcome to the board,

What Heather likely means is IBS does not occur in the small intestine or stomach which is the upper GI tract. By definition IBS occurs in the 'bowel' or colon.

However, it isn't uncommon for IBS pain to be located in the upper right hand quadrant the location of the ascending colon. This is not the upper GI tract. That is where I experience most of my pain however, sometimes when I have a serious attach I may have pain there and across transverse colon. On this web page there is a picture of the colon with the various parts labelled for reference.
