The analogy you used sounds rather strange and parts are in error.

Psyllium is 2/3 SF and 1.3 IF. Its isn't a pure SF.

IF absorbs water, swells and expands. SF dissolves in water to make a gel; it doesn't swell.

By definition all fiber (SF, IF and functional fiber) are indigestible. We don't make the enzymes to break fiber down into constituent parts that our bodies can absorb. Up to 15%-20% of IF is partially fermented in the colon by bacteria. On the other hand some SFs are partially fermentable while others are completely fermented. And some SFs ferment rapidly and others slowly.

Distention is cause by bloating which can be a result of gas from fermentation.
