Everyone produces gas from fermentation in the colon. This isn't unique to individuals with IBS. It seems that individuals with IBS are more sensitive to things like the pressure from gas on the intestinal wall due to problems in the brain-gut communication process. Heather states it this way "In plain English, it means that IBS symptoms result from a hypersensitivity of the nervous system of the gut, along with misinterpretations of the nervous system messages from the gut by the central nervous system and the brain."

How gas production and GI motility are related is a complex issue. For example, the production of methane gas in the colon is known to correlate with the amount of C - the more methane produced the more C.
