The information in this paper, as I understand it, suggests that a soluble fibre supplement (bulking agents) has a limited/no effect on global IBS symptoms (including constipation.) This, as I know you're aware, contradicts information from NICE and other advisory groups. The paper also notes, as we know, that IF is likely to exacerbate global symptoms. It is interesting to note, that in some cases (that is, people with 'defecation disorders'), an increase in dietary fibre does not reduce transit time and can in fact be harmful.

It concludes that a soluble fibre supplement should not be used to treat IBS-C. It also suggests that foods high in resistant starch (they mention oats and cornflakes), the NICE guidelines include: processed foods and re-cooked foods, should be limited due to complete fermentation, increased gas production, bloating and distension. However, this contradicts other NICE guidance that suggests eating oats to combat wind and bloating.

I may now have to rethink my fibre intake. I know you're IBS-D, and therefore our situations are not the same, however, if you were in my position, would you continue with a fibre supplement? And would you rethink your intake of resistant starch? For instance, I often have oatmeal porridge, with oatmilk, for breakfast, would I be better to reduce the oats in my diet, perhaps switch to rice based cereal and milk?

Thanks again,

Best Wishes
