I had a funny thing happen at market today. I was selling edamame and had a sign that said '(fresh soybeans)'. A regular customer who is really nice and educated was flabbergasted because she didn't realize edamame was soy and that her sister has been telling her not to eat soy but she has been reading how healthy edamame is. She said "I don't eat soy, but I was going to buy edamame because I read it is so healthy." so we talked about all the misinformation out there about soy and other dietary and health issues. I feel there is a soy smear campaign that started with the crazy people who think soy causes boys to be gay. She said she had been told it makes girl reach puberty faster. But we talked about that and you don't see girls in Asia (besides certain parts of Bangkok I suppose) reach puberty faster. It is much more likely that hormones in milk and meat are causing the premature puberty. The type of estrogen in soy doesn't cause an increase in the body estrogen somehow. I guess plant estrogens lessen the body's estrogen- but I am no chemist!
Anyway it was funny that she had believed two opposite bits of advice on the same subject! She didn't know if she should eat edamame or not!

(I'm putting this on the EFI board because we talk about soy so much for our diets.)

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!
