Dear Heather and members of the board,

My name is Nico and after much debating I have decided to post on here, to see whether I would be able to obtain some words of advice.

My story is pretty similar to many IBS stories: it started all of a sudden, no one knew what it was, doctors paid little attention to it and I was told it was all in my head. This meant that all the information and improvements that I obtained, I obtained only through my own research and trial and error - like most of us.

It all started 4 years ago, in Spain. I came back from 6 months in Spain, and after immediately suffered from what I can guess was an intestinal infection, though I took no antibiotics. It simply meant that for a few weeks I had diarrhea, constantly. I did not give that much thought, as I have always had a strong digestive system. Boy, was I wrong. I am now 25, and since then I have been dealing with symptomps my own away. I tried a variety of diets and methods (though some are yet to be experimented with), and though I was able to control it, I was never be able to completely stablise it. On top of that I went travelling to Brazil last year and caught intestinal amoebas, which I am sure did not do any help to my situation.

I have recently bought your "IBS the first year" book, and it obviously contains a lot of interesting tips and guidelines. However I just wanted to check something with you. A few months ago (before the book) I "decided" that my problems was probably something completely different, that I was actually coeliac. I stopped eating wheat, which resulted in (sorry to be so blunt) my stool being "normal" (normal colour and consistency), but my bloating and flatulence worsened. I was primarily eating salads (insoluble fiber, I know), so I guess that must be problem.

I decided to change that and follow your guidelines.
I am know following a very simple diet: potatoes, pasta, rice, chicken etc, which has helped my bloating and flatulence a lot, but has made my stool not so "normal" anymore. It has lost its consistence and seems too soft and green. I have also had gastritis for the past few weeks, but I dont know if it is related, as it has been a stressful period.

I guess my question is what am I do wrong, and can I changer that. That is and whether you think this actually sounds like IBS or just some form of food allergy or intolerance, or maybe a combination of the two.

Just so you know a bit about me, I exercise, sleep enough, and watch what I eat. I may sometimes fall victim to some chocolate or pistachio nuts, but I am big herbal tea drinkers, drink a lot of water in general, I dont like fizzy drinks apart from sparkling water from time to time, but I am a social smoker and drinker, which I know "stresses" the intestines out. I am also taking friendly bacteria in the form of powder and I have taken Aloe Vera in juice form and as a colon cleanser, which did not seem to help. I have recently bought some magnesium pills, but should I maybe invest in some calcium ones and combine the two?

I am looking forward to knowing your thought on the matter.
Many thanks

Nico
