Gerikat, glad to hear they are working out for you. Best thing I have ever done for my severe IBS.
Yes reduction of anxiety and stress are side effects from doing HT in general, but the real benefit comes from the gut specific hypnotherapy from the hypnotherapist.
The subconcious runs the digestive system through the autonomic nervous system, down to the enteric nervous sytem or brain in the gut.
Another aspect, they are slowly working on is blood flow to the anterior cinculate cortex, which processes pain in the brain.
But really importantly since the fight or flight is hardwired to the brain, it can help on the sbconicous level on the fight or flight. This happens so fast you don't conciously think about it.
A lot of work is being done on HT for IBS, but it doesn't have the funding say prescription drugs have for IBS. However in research about 80% of the people get about 80% better on average. And the benefits can last long after the treatment, so its actually doing something very benefical.
Like someone said, it also helps non gi symptoms, sleep, headaches and other symnptoms that can go along with IBS.
There are a lot of links here for IBS and functional disorders, but this one is interesting also.
