Here's what Heather told me that got me to quit cold turkey:

". . . decaf doesn't matter - there's an enzyme in coffee beans that's a GI irritant) would wreak havoc on anyone with IBS. I don't think any dietary measures, or hypnosis, or anything else would overcome that (it sure wouldn't for me). You're just constantly, and seriously, irritating your digestive tract. All of your other efforts may help mitigate this, but I don't think they'll be much more than a band-aid.

I would stop drinking coffee asap, and cold turkey. Since you're not having the caffeine, you shouldn't have any withdrawal symptoms. Try Rocamojo, a roasted soy bean "coffee" that folks on the board love. Do search on the boards for coffee and you'll find lots of good substitutes. . . . coffee is right up there with red meat, dairy, and soda pop. No benefits, many dangers.

I think you're going to be shocked by how much better you feel, almost immediately, if you give up the joe."

Annkent, Heather was right. Not only do I feel SOOO much better since the 11th, but I haven't had cramps since. As far as coffee as a laxative, I've always known it to "start me up" in the morning -- even when I first started drinking it -- my brother used to refer to it as liquid draino. For me, I'll choose a fiber supplement instead! (By the way, it's important to work up to the right AMOUNT of fiber -- perhaps your friend wasn't taking enough.) You might give Rocomojo a try -- do a search in here 'cause there was a lot posted about it, including their web site. I chose to just cut it out completely -- including a substitute, opting instead to sip fennel-peppermint tea. I even took some with me to ihop this morning!

Oh, and another plus: my blood pressure has dropped a LOT! My doc was about to put me on medication, but after the 11th, I went in for a check-up, he took my blood pressure, and was shocked to see how low it was! No meds for me! AND -- it's stayed down since.

Okay, so it ain't easy. Breakfast at ihop this morning was tough, smelling the coffee all around me. But I wasn't tempted -- it's NOT WORTH IT!

Bev.
