I tried the acacia fiber years ago but that didn't help (yes, I built up slowly as prescribed). I tried living on white bread (that I baked myself from organic flour) for days on end, too, but that didn't help either. But shortly after some surgery I had a couple years ago, I ate raw salads and fruit at the hospital, and had the healthiest bowel movements since college! That lasted only a week; I'm convinced it had everything to do with the anesthesia, which works on the nervous system. I think we need to get beyond the idea that IBS-C is ALL food-related and can be suppressed with the right diet. In my experience it's totally linked to my nervous system. For example, getting an e-mail from an ex-boyfriend brings up all kinds of emotional associations that set my nerves firing--and also can set off my GI tract. Public speaking does the same thing to me. After years of experimentation, I conclude that my gut motility has ZERO to do with the foods I eat. Caffeine is a drug, and I don't care if it's bad for me in the long run. I'm practically home-bound from the intense pain of bloating and the embarrassment of looking 6 months pregnant, so if a cup of coffee is all it takes to alleviate those symptoms, I'd be a fool not to rely on it. It's interesting that there are still plenty of people on these message boards who obviously have tried food/supplement changes like me and have gotten no relief...
