Hi, I'm "old" to IBS, but new to this board. I only discovered Heather's works last year. What a breath of fresh air to hear from someone who understands. All these years of doctors saying "more fiber, more fiber" with no distinction between the types of fiber or anything else, I already knew from my own personal experience it was all bunk. Oddly enough, much of what Heather has written I had already stumbled upon quite accidently through trial and error - nice to see I wasn't wrong for going "against the grain." But through Heather's books I got to understand the WHY's, and I wouldn't have tried to take a fiber supplement or the hypnosis (not sure how much that helped, but I do find it pleasant and relaxing).
Now, here's my problem. I've managed to get myself through flareups in the past relatively quickly (within a few weeks or a couple of months, then staying stable for several months or more). This time around, though, I'm having the worst episode ever (and that's saying something after 20 some years). I took antibiotics 4 months ago for a sinus/ear infection and I've been a mess ever since. I've tried several different types of probiotics, I've reduced my diet down to pretty much rice and bananas, and I'm back on Donnatol (which I haven't taken in eons), but I still am getting horrible pain, cramping and nausea; frequency varies from a several times a week to every couple of weeks (those couple of weeks are the real tease - just when I think I'm stable, BAM!). I've been missing tons of work, which I can't afford to do. I'm back with the gastroenterologist going through all the tests again just to make sure it's not something new that's cropped up, but so far all negative.
Sorry to go on so long, and I know you probably can't recommend anything other than what's already here; I guess I just needed to unload because this is the most hopeless I've ever felt. I went through the hypno program once, I'm going to try it again to see if it helps. I do know one thing - unless it's a matter of life or death, I am never taking antibiotics again.
