It really depends on the person - I KNOW I have some food triggers - Starbucks coffee is a guaranteed laxative for me, so I have to avoid it. Other coffees are hit and miss. On the other hand, I almost always can eat pizza (which, because of the fat and cheese, by all rights should be a huge IBS trigger) without any problems at all. Most other foods are just kind of hit and miss with me.
I've always thought that my problem was 75-80% anxiety related, and only 20-25% food. But either way, I think what you eat will definitely help or hurt your IBS, whether it is mainly a mind-gut thing or not.
Edit to add: Lots of people have had tremendous success with hypnotherapy, so I didn't mean to come across like I was discrediting it. If the diet alone doesn't have me stable in a few more months, I will fork out the money for the CDs and try it for myself.
-------------------- IBS-A since age 12, and fructose sensitive; with the exception of my pregnancy, have been following Heather's diet since Nov. 19, 2007.
Taking 12g of Acacia per day. Relatively stable since March 2008!
