Need clarification on whole grains/whole wheat

Okay, so when I first started this diet, I posted lots of questions about the whole wheat vs. wheat vs. wheat bran, etc...I think I've got that down. But now with all the hoopla about "whole grain", where does that fit in? For example, I can tolerate whole wheat bread but seem to have some trouble with 9-grain or 7 grain. Then again I can eat multi-grain English muffins (with an SF base). So many cereals and crackers are listing their grams of whole grain now. What is typically safe for an IBSer? And what exactly constitutes "whole grain" or "muli-grain"? And is "whole oat" considered a healthy whole grain? I can tolerate oats very well. I'm so confused. Thanks.
