Magnesium - nonlaxative effect

Am I the only person for whom Magnesium has a constipating effect?

After not being able to find a Cal/Mag supplement that is not constipating for me, I decided to just take a Magnesium supplement. I started taking 400 mg (200mg 2x a day) last Wednesday. I was doing okay but feeling a little bloated. I upped the dosage to 600 mg (200 mg 3x a day) on Monday of this week, as I'm pmsing and thought it would help with that. My digestive system seemed to seize. I still had a BM each day but it was incomplete and I felt unbelievably bloated. I went back to 400mg yesterday and am starting to feel a little better, but it's definitely not having a laxative effect.

Could it be that my body is just adjusting to it and I will feel the laxative effects after time? Has anyone else had this experience and if so, did it get better with continued use?

Also, since magnesium tends to relax muscles, could it be relaxing the muscles of my colon so much that they're not moving as they should be?

Thanks in advance for your help.
