I've heard that GI doctors see a lot of patients with IBS, but there's not really much they can do other than prescribing anti-spasmodics, anti-depressants (low doses that don't affect your mood but that help regulate bowel activity), and make sure that what you really have is IBS and not some other disease (in addition to the stool samples, you might want to consider having a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy). You could show your doctor Heather's book and suggest that you'd like to manage your IBS through diet, medications, and stress management. If your GI isn't willing to work with you, then find another GI or talk with your family/medical doctor. My MD has been great in helping me with my IBS.
