I am going back to school to get my teaching cert (b/c of IBS I cannot really hold a true full time 40+ hours a week job, and I need the breaks so I'm changing career paths) and I am trying to decide whether or not to do el ed or high school. I hate to say my decision has to be based more on IBS than what I want to do... but as many of you know, that isn't the case. I've had IBS for so many years now, I have accepted that it isn't going away. So- from a standpoint of how many hours and how much stress you endure, can any of you teachers give me input? I have heard many say there is far less paperwork at the high school level. I would prefer high school, but the days are longer and I am worried about discipline issues being a stressor. On the other hand, I currently sub for k-5, and the constant demand of the little ones needing endless attentions is also draining at times, although it's not that bad- and discipline issues are fairly innocent. For the mental stimulation I would prefer high school, but I worry that it might be more stressful than el ed. Do any of you teachers have any input on the topic? Thank you!
