Relying on other peoples' experiences isn't enough--you have to do your own personal research, e.g., articles written by doctors and researchers--with the caveat that even they, smart though they may be, are not all-knowing godlike beings. You also have to consider what someone might have to gain or lose by making "X" statement. (For example, someone recently posted about a study for a new IBS drug, but it turns out the study was paid for by the maker of the drug--which to me is immediately suspect. An independent study would have carried much more weight with me.)

I've seen at least one person on the boards state that they went out and bought something, before they understood what it was or how it could help them, which to me just feels wrong. And I've also read on the WWWeb information from folks who purport to be doctors or researchers, making statements about IBS that are inconsistent with what I have learned both by reading and experience to be true. It's a continual and individual process, testing and weighing information for its validity, from multiple sources. Heather seems to have made a full-time job of it, as you see. It can be daunting, I'm sure.

While the testing leading toward an IBS diagnosis is expensive, *managing* your IBS doesn't have to be (IMO). It helps that I have an "inner skeptic" that tends to be wary of anyone/anything who tries to part me from my hard-earned money.

Well, this is just my experience. Check other sources, too, and make the best-informed decision possible. Hope this helps!
