Manage it. It's really not difficult, it just takes discipline... and it's completely and totally worth the effort, coming from someone who's been symptom-free for over a year now.
1. Do the diet. It's healthy in general (not just for IBS'ers), and it really works if you have patience and stick with it. No cheating!
2. Avoid those trigger foods at all costs, no matter how bad you're craving them. The cravings go away eventually.
3. Manage your stress, anxiety, and other negative emotions. If it's as simple as yoga and daily walks, do it. If it means therapy or the hypno tapes, do it. If it means getting medicated, do it.
4. Accept. I found that once I accepted that I have a disorder that I'm going to have for the rest of my life - which is what IBS is, there is no cure - it became a lot easier to just deal with bad days as calmly as possible, and be REALLY happy about the good ones.
Good luck! You can do it.
