IBS diet safe for diabetes tendancies? Confused!

My doctor was wondering how eating so much white bread, potatoes and other soluable starches on the IBS diet, can be good for blood sugar control for those prone to diabetes. I had gestational diabetes with my pregnancies but no longer have it. Does anyone have a good answer for this? I know today's high profile diets tell you to stay away from high carbs for glucose control. I'm confused and concerned that I may be leading myself into the diabetes world in trying to control my IBS-D.
