Stool softeners?

Last time I saw my doctor(when she diagnosed me with IBS-C), she told me to take Colace, which is a stool softener. So I've been taking it everyday, and my question is: Is this safe? I know with regular laxatives, your body can get addicted to them so they aren't good to take. But if it's only a stool softener will my body still get used to it? I'm very sensitive to insoluble fiber, I can only really eat it in cooked veggies and in fruit, and I try to have them as often as possible but I don't think it's enough to help me go. I'm trying to add more fiber to my diet slowely (too much at once is harsh!), so in the meantime is it ok to just keep taking the Colace everyday? I also take magnesium, but that doesn't seem to help.
