Because ovarian cancer symptoms are kind of "vague" they can be mistaken for IBS and, in fact, Heather lists ovarian cancer as a diagnosis that MUST be excluded before settling on IBS. Part of the problem is that detection of ovarian cancer is not as simple as a blood test. CA-125 yields too many false positives and too many false negatives to be reliable on its own. Here are two Websites that point out the problems with the email you've quoted:

BreakTheChain (includes the text of a revised email by the woman who originally wrote the one you quote; she is asking that people stop passing along her original, so you might want to send her revision back to the person who sent you yours)

AboutCom (makes a number of good points, including the fact that - contrary to what the email says - younger women are at less risk; it doesn't mean young women shouldn't be checked before being diagnosed with IBS, but it does mean they shouldn't worry)

Last, but not least, I ran across an article in the February 1, 2006, Woman's Day called "Diseases Doctors Miss". It included ovarian cancer and this is what it says:

Quote:

Mayo Clinic researchers recently found a pattern of early symptoms among women later diagnosed with ovarian cancer, including crampy abdominal pain, urinary urgency and frequency and incontinence. If any of these symptoms last longer than a few weeks, ask your doctor to screen you for ovarian cancer, which usually involves a rectal exam and a trans-vaginal sonogram of your ovaries.
