Enzyme therapy is for more than digestive disorders. It is true that they need not be taken in conjunction with meals in order to be effective. Other things enzyme therapy is helpful for include asthma, arthritis, cancer, peridontal disease, fibro., rosacea... Enzymes are food supplements.
Perhaps a vegetarian digestive enzyme might be more gentle? It is recommended that if stronger enzymes cause reactions to try weaker ones.
However, if they are causing more harm than good, I'd skip them all together as well.
I'm pretty sure that Nexium has gelatin in it. Could that be causing you a problem? Hmmm, maybe we should look at some of the non-medicinal ingredients of these thing???
