Hi there,

Okay, I think the first step you might want to take is a deep breath! A new diagnosis of anything can be really overwhelming, and there will be a lot of information coming your way. But fear not, people here are really friendly and helpful and you are doing the right thing by finding out as much as you can to help your daughter. She is very lucky to have you as a mom!

I would echo what everyone else said as well, have a long look around the site when you get a chance. Before I got a chance to get the books (which is a really good idea, by the way. They are really informative on what IBS is, AND there are loads of healthy, IBS-safe recipes that will get on a good track), I relied on the website for information. Take a long look around the other pages, then take a look around the IBS Recipe board and the index. There are loads of recipes available. You can use the "search" function to search for something specific, or go the index and it's all organized there for you.

Just to address a couple of your questions right away, herbs are great for IBS. The books outline a lot of them, and I think they might be on the website as well. Oregano, for exmaple, is great! Spicy things can be irritating, so go easy.. especially on a child.

Sugar isn't a problem for most people. A lot of the recipes, you'll notice if you look at the breads and cakes and stuff, have quite a lot of sugar. This is also good to keep your daughter from losing too much weight.
If you are worried about weight loss, do a board search on this board (Eating for IBS) about "weight loss" and see what others have said. Things like potatoes and sweet potatoes are great for keeping weight up.

Hope this helps, at least to get you started!
So go ahead and have a look around, pick up the books if you can and then feel free to ask us any questions you might have along the way!

Good luck, and in the meantime, have you daughter eat off the "What to Eat When You Can't Eat Anything" if she is really suffering at the moment. I hope she feels better soon, you're doing a great job!

Cheers,
--Steph
