Mine's kind of self-imposed. I'm doing Lexapro (2.5 mg) because, once upon a time, I had actual depression and was put on it for that, which totally cleared up my mild IBS-D (as well as the depression). I went off of the Lexapro after a year and a half because I felt I didn't need it for depression anymore, and it did have a couple of side efects... but the D came back with a vengeance.
I've had relentless D for over a year, and I take 2 Imodium a day right now so I can hold a job, etc. But I still have my Lexapro prescription, so I thouht I'd see if I can do a lower dose to fix my D and avoid the bad Lexapro side-effects. So I split my 10 mg pills into 4, and take one every day. So far, it's only been a week, but I haven't seen any improvement in the D. I'll go up to 5 mg after a few weeks and see if that helps. I think the bad side effects started for me at 10 mg.
My GI has basically said he can't find anything wrong with me, and I should try whatever I want including the Lexapro... so here I am. If the 5 mg doesn't work, I don't know if I'll go up to the 10 mg or not. I admit I liked being able to eat whatever I wanted back then... I'm just not sure which lifestyle was worse: the Lexapro side-effects, or the IBS misery. If this doesn't work, I stick to my daily Imodium regimen.
May I ask what dosage your doc wants to start you on (if you know)?
