Irritable Bowel Syndrome Message Boards | Anti-depressants just for treating D

I have a second colonoscopy on Tuesday. I'm 99.9% sure nothing will come up, which means my GI is going to push anti-depressants at me. He has already mentioned he wants me to start on Lexapro or Celexa.

I've done a board search on anti-depressants. People have great stuff to say about them -- about helping the anxiety contributing to their IBS. I don't have anxiety. I'm not afraid to leave my house. Sometimes I CAN'T leave the house because my D is so bad, but if so I take more Imodium and feel resigned/irked. Even when I have a bad D attack at work and end up having to go home, I don't freak out about the possibility of not being able to make it all the way (it's about an hour drive home) -- I fight as hard as I can to keep back the D until I'm home, but at the same time I figure that even if I don't make it it's not like the end of the world. I have my share of pity parties, but all in all I think I'm coping about as well as anyone could.

So. I'd be taking ADs JUST to help with the D. From what I've read I don't think it's worth it. I've also read through other IBS message boards and it seemed like most of the people on ADs were trying to get off them.

I just really hate the idea of anything screwing with my mind. I LIKE my mind the way it is, thanks.

What do you guys think??

P.S. I did actually try Elavil several months ago. I really wasn't on it long enough to make a true difference -- two weeks -- but in that time it made me a weird depressed sugar-mad zombie and it took me ages to recover from it. The GI says the SSRIs are a lot different, but at the same time SSRIs seem to be used more for the C people.
