ugh, i feel like a doofus who can't make tea

inspired by someone here, i decided to make tea in my (now neglected) coffee maker. i ran the machine on plain water a handful of times to clean out the coffee residue, washed the removable parts with soap, wiped everything i could get to. so tonight i fill it up, pour a couple of tea bags in the pot, and presto! my fennel tea tastes nasty. not like coffee, exactly, but there's a left over coffee flavor covering everything, and it definitely does not taste like fennel. any hints on cleaning this thing out? also, i assume the tea bags should go in the pot rather than the cone so the tea can brew. is this true?
