Heather talks about Immodium in her book The First Year: IBS; however, this information is available on the site. Here's a quote:

"Immodium and Lomotil are the most common anti-diarrheal medications for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. They enhance intestinal water absorption, strengthen anal sphincter tone, and decrease intestinal transit, thereby increasing stool consistency and reducing frequency." The First Year: IBS (Medications)

As for PeptoBismol (which contains bismuth, a mineral), I think it lowers the secretion of fluid into the intestines and has antibacterial and antacid effects.

Neither one fixes the problem or cures diarrhea/IBS, but they can be used as preventatives and for maintenance when dealing with IBS-D. For me, I find they work best when following Heather's diet.

Unfortunately, I don't know much more than that. I hope it was of some help!
