I've always believed that a large part of my ibs is due to the amount of tension I hold in my body - especially the way it affects my breathing, and also the high amount of overall stress I seem to feel in reaction that don't seem to stress other people out so much. I've done a few things which have helped. I'm learning to meditate, this is really powerful for becoming aware of the emotional and physical reactions I have to everyday life. I also take classes in something called Awareness Through Movement which is a part of Feldenkrais method (which I love so much that I've begun a training to become a practitioner). It's a method of using your body more efficiently and comfortably, and it is helping me become more and more comfortable in my own skin. If you're interested I think Feldenkrais.org has listings of teachers in the US and abroad.
