I agree significant people in our lives need to be told about our needs and reminded about them when necessary. Sort of like stringing the barbed wire, then riding patrol to make sure it stays up - and patching it when needed. But riding fence goes a lot smoother when two people do it. In other words, it might make more of an impact if your DH pitched in and tried talking to your mother-in-law about this - after all she's HIS mother.
Maybe he could try something along the lines of:
"Gee, Mom, it was sweet of you to think of how much I like steak when you suggested a Morton's gift certificate. But, you know, I just can't enjoy myself when my beloved wife, whom I adore more than life itself, can't relax and enjoy herself. Why, she was going to just not eat at all since the only thing on the menu she could have was lobster and that's so horribly expensive. I was heartsick at the idea of not sharing our anniversary dinner with her and insisted she order the lobster despite the fact that it means we won't be able to pay our mortgage this month."
