I did a day of most unpleasant prep, then went to an outpatient center the next day. I was given mild sedation and Versed(sp?) so I wouldn't remember the procedure when I woke up. The colonoscopy did NOT require any cutting - the doctor simply inserted a "camera" on some kind of tube all the way up my colon. (Boy, am I glad I don't actually remember this.) I was out of the outpatient center a few hours after I walked in. No cutting open, no overnight stay, some nice drugs.
I think in the US, a colonoscopy is considered the gold standard for checking for colon cancer. It sounds like from what Retrograde is saying, the gold standard is different in different countries. Unfortunately, it seems like the preps for the colonoscopy and the barium enema are equally icky.
