The two tests do basically the same thing and I don't think one is superior to the other. The difference is that one requires you to get cut open (colonoscopy) and the other one doesn't (enema) - but they're looking at the same stuff, whether up close and personal or by xray. It seems that some hospitals/doctors tend to do the colonoscopies by default and others just do the barium enemas (i.e. in Canada it seems everyone has the enemas). If your doctor recommends an enema, it might be difficult for you to convince him/her to let you have a colonoscopy since that costs a lot more for the hospital (usually an overnight stay). Anyway, the two tests are different experiences (kind of a choice between invasive and uncomfortable) but equally effective, I think. So unless something went wrong with the first test there would be no need to get both. That said, to ensure that you *do* have IBS (and not something else, masking as IBS) you really should talk to your doctor about getting one of these tests done (plus, all the other tests Heather recommends).
