Thanks, Heather-- It's a microscopic parasitic infection that about 20-25% of the population has (mostly asymptomatic, it seems). Here is the CDC website that describes it: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dpd/parasites/blastocystishominis/factsht_blastocystis_hominis.htm
A lot of websites I read say it is very hard to get rid of, and it is a bigger problem in people with immune system problems or stomach/intestinal disorders.
My doctor put me on a combination of antibiotics: metronidazole and ciprofloxacin. He feels it could be quite effective, although I've read that you may have to take several rounds of it. (Imagine how thrilled I am about antibiotics with an already sensitive tummy! And these particular drugs are apparently hard on everyone.)
I am so embarrassed about this, which is probably silly since it's pretty common. But I am ultra careful about washing produce, and I can't believe I got this. And I'm so fearful I'll be one of the people I read about who got it and has had symptoms for months or even years.
I also made an appointment with a holistic MD in my area who is known for dealing with this sort of thing, as well as helping people with chronic stomach problems. Seemed like a good idea since I have so many issues (IBS, fibromyalgia, and now this!).
Any help you can offer would sure be appreciated!!
Thanks, Judith
