Hi, folks! Thanks for all the responses so far! I really appreciate it! I'm sorry any of you had to go through the pain of a severe attack, but it helps me to know that others have had attacks as severe as mine. I was feeling like something of a hypochondriac, because it had never been so terrible, but after seeing your responses, I know I'm not the only one whose felt that way.
The ER people treated me well. I am totally blind, and was out to dinner with a group of blind friends when this occurred. No one could drive us to the hospital, and I was afraid to leave the restroom of IHOP for fear of losing control, on both ends, if you get my drift. So they called an ambulance. They gave me pain meds through an IV first, then once I reached the ER, they gave me anti-nausea medication, which worked like a charm. They decided to do a CT scan of my tummy, even though they knew of the IBS diagnosis, just to make sure it wasn't something else in this particular instance. Any of you ever had to drink that huge glass of orange "contrast," for the CT test? Anyway, the tests came back normal, as I figured they would.
OK, so if you guys cut out dairy from your diets, what do you replace it with? Very sorry you had to go through that. Dairy is often replaced with soy and rice fake dairy products. Soy milk is very tasty. Soy sour cream and cream cheese and creamer are very good too. Dairy free margarine such as Smart Balance is a great butter substitute and soy ice cream or sorbet is delicious and I hardly miss ice cream at all! Soy cheese on the other hand is not so great -especially if you are a cheese connoisseur.

"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!
